What is Purple Island?

Purple Island is the popular name for Jazirat Bin Ghanim, a small mangrove island near Al Khor in northern Qatar. Rustic wooden bridges, quiet channels and seasonal birdlife have made it one of the country's most photographed spots.

How to get there from Doha

Purple Island is roughly an hour's drive north of Doha, depending on traffic and where you start. Public transport options are limited, so most visitors go by private car or on a guided tour.

Our private Purple Island tour collects you from your hotel, drives you up the coast, stops at Al Khor and returns you to Doha — with the timing planned around the best light.

Best time to visit

  • Late afternoon for warm light and sunset colours
  • October to April for comfortable temperatures
  • Weekdays are quieter than weekends
  • Check tides and weather — conditions change the look of the channels

Make a day of it

Combine Purple Island with Al Thakhira mangrove kayaking or our North of Qatar tour, which adds the UNESCO-listed Al Zubarah Fort.
